Description

The autorifleman carries the most powerful weapon in the section.
He provides a strong base of fire for the rest of the team, enabling safe maneuvers.

Role

The autorifleman (AR) is one of the most important parts, and usually one of the more experienced members of the section.
He is able to lay down continuous suppressive fire, reducing the enemies' ability to return fire, thus allowing friendly units to maneuver safely.
With his high ammunition count and rate of fire, the autorifleman is also very effective at engaging groups of infantry both in offense and defense.
If need be, the autorifleman - especially when carrying a higher caliber GPMG - can engage soft vehicle targets, disabling the vehicle or the crew.
All this makes the autorifleman a team player; he provides suppressive fire for the team, and depends on his team to cover his flanks.
For extended operations an assistant autorifleman (AAR) might be assigned to the autorifleman to carry additional ammunition.

Certification

The Autorifleman Basic Certification is available for everyone who wants to learn the basics of being an autorifleman.
It teaches the basics of positioning, firing techniques as well as an overview over the different weapons the autorifleman uses.

Equipment

Weapons

The autorifleman uses a variety of automatic weapons, from assault rifle caliber LMGs to battle rifle caliber GPMGs.

M249 (5.56mm)

M249 SAW
Caliber 5.56x45mm
Rate of fire 800 RPM
Feed system 100-round or 200-round belt boxes
Weight 140

The M249 is the lowest caliber LMG available to autoriflemen.
It has a high rate of fire, is easy to control and both the weapon and its ammunition are relatively lightweight, allowing the AR to carry more ammunition than with other weapons.
Especially against targets wearing little to no body protection, the M249 is a very viable option.
The M249 comes with an integrated bipod.

MX SW (6.5mm)

MX SW IAR
Caliber 6.5x39mm
Rate of fire 625 RPM
Feed system 30-round or 100-round magazines
Weight 120

The MX SW is not a true LMG, but rather an assault rifle variant modified for sustained fire.
It is the most lightweight and maneuverable option available, behaving very similar to the ssault rifle it is based on.
It has the lowest rate of fire, making it very controllable, and the 6.5mm caliber allows it to engage targets wearing body armor more easily.
Because it is based on the MX series of assault rifles, it is compatible with the regular 30 round magazines, allowing the AR to receive magazines from fellow riflemen if need be.
The MX SW does not come with an integrated bipod, but a bipod can be attached to its bottom rail, and it can be suppressed, making it useful for night missions.

(Reach) Mk200 (6.5mm)

Mk200 LMG
Caliber 6.5x39mm
Rate of fire 800 RPM
Feed system 200-round belt boxes
Weight 140

The Mk200 is often called the golden middle of LMGs.
It offers a high rate of fire, a decent caliber in 6.5mm, decent accuracy and decent handling.
The large ammunition boxes allow for long periods of sustained fire, but due to the higher caliber they weigh more than the 5.56mm boxes for the M249.
All of these factors make the Mk200 viable in almost all situations, making it the best all-rounder among the automatic rifles.
The MX SW does not come with an integrated bipod, but a bipod can be attached to its bottom rail, and it can be suppressed, making it useful for night missions.
NOTE: Use the reverse-engineered Reach Mk200 variant, which uses custom magazines firing red tracers.

(Reach) Zafir (7.62mm)

Zafir LMG
Caliber 7.62x54mm
Rate of fire 952 RPM
Feed system 150-round belt boxes
Weight 180

The (Reach) Zafir is a reverse-engineered version of the CSAT LMG.
With 7.62mm, it has the highest caliber available to autoriflemen, and is able to engage soft vehicle targets with more effect than a 5.56mm or 6.5mm autorifle could.
It sports the highest rate of fire of all the LMGs, which combined with the high caliber makes it hard to control.
Both the Zafir itself and its ammunition are heavy as well, resulting in fewer magazines carried per weight, compared to other ARs, making it slightly less suited for suppressing fire.
The Zafir comes with an integrated bipod.
NOTE: Use the reverse-engineered Reach Zafir variant, which uses custom magazines firing red tracers.

M240 (7.62mm)

M240 GPMG
Caliber 7.62x51mm
Rate of fire 750 RPM
Feed system 100-round belt boxes
Weight 200

The M240 is a heavy general-purpose machine gun (GPMG), chambered in 7.62mm.
With a high caliber and high accuracy, the M240 is suited well for engaging soft vehicle targets and infantry at long distances.
It is the heaviest of all the automatic rifles, but the extra weight and lower rate of fire make it more controllable and more accurate than the Zafir.
It has the lowest magazine capacity with just 100 rounds per box, forcing the autorifleman to reload more often than other ARs.
The M240 works best in concert with another LMG, providing more accurate fire while the LMG suppresses.
The M240 comes with an integrated bipod.

Optics

A medium magnification optic should be used on the automatic rifle, due to the AR's role of suppressing enemy units at a distance - in CQB situations backup ironsights or even hipfiring are usually sufficient.
Ideal optics for the AR are the Elcan M145 sight, which was specifically designed for the use with automatic rifles, and the MRCO, which is a good all-around short to medium range scope, with a 1x and 6x magnification level.

Ammunition

For a general loadout, the autorifleman should carry between 600 and 800 rounds in total, including the belt currently loaded into the weapon.
This should - with proper firing technique - last for a regular operation.
For extended firefights or longer operations, the autorifleman may need to carry more ammunition himself, and/or have an assistant autorifleman assigned to him to supply additional belts.

Protective Gear

A helmet is to be worn at all times - for very light loadouts the Combat Helmet may be downgraded to a Light Combat Helmet.
The default vest provides a good mix of low weight, high carrying capacity and protection.
For low-mobility loadouts, the Reach Heavy Vests provide significantly increased protection against bullets, but at the price of a higher weight and lower carrying capacity. This is especially disadvantageous for the autorifleman, as the belt boxes are very large.

Other Equipment

Most of the free space on an autorifleman's vest will be taken up by his ammunition. A general assortment of grenades (smoke and frag) should be a part of the general loadout nonetheless.
A backpack might be needed to carry additional ammunition for extended firefights - depending on the situation an assistant autorifleman can help share the load.

Virtual Arsenal Loadout Templates

Below, three example basline autorifleman loadouts are provided.
Do note that these are not an be-all and end-all when it comes to the gear - every mission has slightly different requirements, which the gear has to be adjusted to.
To import the loadouts into your virtual arsenal, just copy the code below, and import it when you are in the VA.
