Description

The designated marksman is a specialised rifleman, carrying a battle rifle with a high-powered scope. He is able to provide accurate long range fire and take out key targets.

Role

The designated marksman (DM), is usually one of the best shots in the section.
With a rifle in 7.62mm, he can engage enemies at higher distances than other riflemen, and using a high-powered scope can provide accurate fire.
The main role of a DM is taking out priority targets in combat, like anti-armour troops, static weapon crews, officers and autoriflemen.
For this, an intimate knowlegde of the rifle and the projectile's trajectory is needed, to correctly zero in the sights and, if necessary, adjust the aim.

Certification

The Designated Marksman Basic Certification is available for everyone who wants to learn the basics of being a DM.
It teaches the basics of positioning, target identification and long-range shooting.

Equipment

Weapons

The designated marksman is defined by the rifle he uses - aptly called the designated marksman rifle (DMR).

Designated Marksman Rifle

The DMR is usually chambered in 7.62mm, which provides greater armour penetration and damage than the regular rifleman calibers 5.56mm and 6.5mm could.
There are a variety of DMRs to choose from, like the Mk18 EBR, MK-I EMR, Mk14, or the SR-25.
There is only a slight difference between those weapons, and they all perform well as medium-long range rifles.
A bipod should always be attached to the DMR to increase stability while shooting from a rested position.

Optics

Designated marksmen usually employ larger magnification optics than other riflemen.
An RCO scope is a good short-medium range scope (6x), with a backup sight to keep CQB capabilities.
For slightly longer ranges, the DMS (6x/12x) and MOS (7x / 15x) optics are great medium-long range optics.
For long ranges, the Kahlia (14x/33x) and AMS (10x/30x) scopes provide great magnification.
All of those optics come with a 1x backup sight on top of the scope for close combat emergencies.

Ammunition

A regular loadout should contain between 6 and 8 magazines, for a total of 120-160 + 20 rounds.

Protective Gear

A helmet is to be worn at all times - for very light loadouts the Combat Helmet may be downgraded to a Light Combat Helmet.
The default vest provides a good mix of low weight, high carrying capacity and protection.
For low-mobility loadouts, the Reach Heavy Vests provide significantly increased protection against bullets, but at the price of a higher weight and lower carrying capacity.

Other Equipment

A secondary optic in the vest, with low or no magnification might be of use when using primarily long range scopes.
A Vector IV is useful for ranging targets, if the section lead or 2IC cannot provide this information. Backpacks are usually not needed.

Do note that these are not an be-all and end-all when it comes to the gear - every mission has slightly different requirements, which the gear has to be adjusted to.
