Description

The Grenadier is an extension of the basic rifleman, adding extra flexibility to the section. With the grenade launcher, he can engage targets in defilade and cover and provide fire support.

Role

The grenadier is the role closest to the regular rifleman, and thus shares a lot of his roles.
He is usually armed with the same rifle as the other riflemen, with the addition of an underslung grenade launcher (UGL).
This weapon allows the grenadier to fire 40mm grenade rounds in an arcing trajectory, dealing area-of-effect damage to targets, even in defilade.
The UGL makes the grenadier ideally suited to clear rooms and small fortifications from afar, potentially even through indirect fire, as well as causing casualties to grouped enemies.
Aside from regular HE ammunition, HEDP ammunition, which is more effective against lightly armoured vehicles, and a variety of smoke rounds is available; this can be used to mark enemy positions with red smoke for a CAS strike or to obscure the view of a hostile HMG emplacement.

Certification

The Grenadier Basic Certification is available for everyone who wants to learn the basics of being a grenadier.
It teaches the proper use of the UGL both against infantry and vehicle targets as well as the use of smoke rounds to mark positions.

Equipment

Weapons

The primary weapon of a grenadier is the assault rifle with underslung grenade launcher.

Assault Rifle / UGL

The grenadier usually uses an assault rifle of the same caliber as the rest of the section, so either in 5.56mm or 6.5mm.
The difference for the grenadier is that the 5.56mm assault rifles come with the regular single-shot grenade launcher, while the MX 6.5mm assault rifle comes with the 3-round 3GL launcher.
The weight of the 3-round magazines is equal to that of 3 single 40mm grenade rounds, so a mix of 3-round magazines and single rounds can be used to increase versatility.

Optics

The same rules apply as for the regular rifleman, with one caveat; on M4 variant rifles, the leaf sight of the M203 UGL is located on the front of the top rail.
This means the UGL sight can be obstructed by a large rifle optic, which needs to be kept in mind when choosing optics.

Ammunition

A varied assortment of grenade rounds should be carried, ranging from 40mm HE to white and red smoke rounds to a few HEDP rounds.
The grenadier might reduce the number of magazines carried slightly to make more room to carry 40mm grenade rounds.
A backpack greatly enhances the number of rounds carried, but at the cost of extra weight.
In general, the grenadier is responsible for his own ammunition, and can not - like the AR or AT soldier - rely on other sectionmembers to carry additional ammunition.

Protective Gear

A helmet is to be worn at all times - for very light loadouts the Combat Helmet may be downgraded to a Light Combat Helmet.
The default vest provides a good mix of low weight, high carrying capacity and protection.
For low-mobility loadouts, the Reach Heavy Vests provide significantly increased protection against bullets, but at the price of a higher weight and lower carrying capacity. When carrying a backpack, the reduced capacity is not a big concern, but for low weight loadouts, the reduced vest space is a big drawback.

Other Equipment

The grenadier might also be tasked to carry an AT-4 launcher.
